Patterson's Creek, W.Va., June 26, 1861. 11th Indiana Infantry. A
mounted picket of 13 men attacked a company of 41 Confederates near
Frankfort, routed and pursued them 2 or 3 miles, killing 8 of them and
capturing 17 horses. While returning from the skirmish they were in
turn attacked by a reinforced body of the enemy, and obliged to retire
to Kelly's island at the mouth of Patterson's creek, where they made a
stand and held the enemy at bay until dark, when they scattered and
escaped. Only 1 member of the Union party was killed, and 1 wounded,
while the Confederates lost 31 killed.
