Regimental History
One Hundred and Ninety-seventh Infantry. — Col., John R. Haslett; Lieut.-Col., Charles D. Kenworthy; Maj., John Woodcock. The 197th, known as the 3d Coal Exchange regiment, was mustered into the U. S. service at Camp Cadwalader, Philadelphia, July 14 to 22, 1864, for a 100 days' term. All the field officers were men of previous military experience, as were many of the other officers and men. Shortly after its organization it proceeded to Camp Bradford, Baltimore, and two weeks later was ordered to Rock Island, Ill., where it was employed until the end of its term in guarding prisoners. It was mustered out at Philadelphia on Nov. 11, 1864.
