| One Hundred and Ninety-sixth Infantry.— Col, Harmanus
Neff; Lieut.-Col., Arthur Maginnis; Maj., John A. Gorgas. This
organization, known as the 5th Union League regiment, was mustered into
the U. S. service, at Camp Cadwalader, Philadelphia, July 13 to 20,
1864, for a term of 100 days. On July 27 it proceeded to Camp Bradford,
near Baltimore, and about the middle of August it was ordered to
Chicago, Ill., where it was employed in guarding the prisoners of war at
Camp Douglas. Co. H was detached on Aug. 26, and performed provost duty
at Springfield until the close of term of service. The regiment was
mustered out at Philadelphia on Nov. 17, 1864. |
