1861 - March 15, 1861, assigned command of Forts Jackson and St. Philip and country below Mississippi River. April 11, ordered to assume command of Texas. April 21 assumed command of Department of Texas. April 21 to May 1, absent. August 14, ordered to Richmond. September 30, ordered to report to General Johnston at Manassas. October 4, commanding First Corps, Army of Potomac. November 16, commanding First Division, Army of Potomac. 1862 - January 9, 1862, assigned to command of Trans-Mississippi District, Department No.2. January 10,relieved from duty in Department of Northern Virginia. January 29, assumed command of Trans-Mississippi District No. 2. March 4, assumed command of Army of the West. June 20, assumed command of Department of Southern Mississippi and East Louisiana, relinquishing command of the Army of the West. June 28, assumed command in person of defenses of Vicksburg, Miss. July 2, commanding District of the Mississippi and Army of West Tennessee, Department No. 2. October 12, assumed command of all troops in Mississippi, including exchanged prisoners. December 7, ordered to resume command of First Corps, Army of Mississippi (Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana), relieving Major General Lovell. December 9, in temporary command of Army of Mississippi (Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana). December 17, assigned command of First Corps, Army Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana.

Van Dorn, Earl, born in Mississippi, appointed from Mississippi cadet United States Military Academy, July 1, 1838; graduated fifty-second in a class of fifty-six.

Second lieutenant, November 30, 1844.
First lieutenant, March 3, 1847.
Captain, Second Cavalry, March 3, 1855.
Major, June 28, 1860.
Brevet captain, April 18, 1847, for gallant and meritorious conduct in the battle of Cerro Gordo, Mexico, and
Major, August 20, 1847, for gallant and meritorious conduct in the battles of Contreras and Churubusco, Mexico.
Resigned January 31, 1861.
