Commands.
Brigade composed of the Fourth, Fifth, Twenty-ninth, Thirty-first and
Thirty-third Tennessee Regiments Infantry, being Second Brigade of
Western Department, Clark's Division of Major General Polk's command.
In May, 1862, commanding brigade in Cheatham's Division, Polk's Corps,
Army of Tennessee, composed of the Fourth, Fifth, Nineteenth,
Twenty-fourth, Thirty-first and Thirty-third Tennessee Regiments
Infantry, and Captain Stanford's Battery of Artillery. Division
composed of the brigades of John C. Brown, B. R. Johnson, O. F. Strahl
and H. D. Clayton, in June, 1863, in Army of Tennessee. Afterward,
division composed of the brigades of Brown, Bate, Clayton and Stovall,
Army of Tennessee. In autumn of 1863, division composed of the
brigades of Stovall, Clayton, Gibson and Baker, Army of the West. Army
corps composed of the divisions of French, Loring and Walthall, Army
of Tennessee, June 23, 1864. March 16, 1865, assigned command of
infantry and artillery of Army of Tennessee.
Stewart, Alexander Peter, born in Tennessee, appointed from
Tennessee cadet United States Military Academy, July 1, 1838;
graduated twelfth in a class of fifty-six.
Second lieutenant, Third Artillery, July 1, 1842.
Resigned May 31, 1845.
