Commanding from May 8, 1862, to October 16, 1862, Department of Southwestern Virginia, or Western Virginia. Commanding Division in Department of Alabama, Mississippi and East Louisiana, Army of the Mississippi. Commanding First Corps, Army of the Mississippi, December 15, 1862. January 26, 1863, commanding forces about Granada, Miss. August 20, 1863, commanding a division in Department of Alabama, Mississippi and East Louisiana. June 14, 1864, succeeded to the command of General Leonidas Polk, at Pine Mountain, after the death of General Polk. May 10, 1864, commanding a division in the Atlanta campaign.
