Colonel, Sixteenth Georgia Regiment Infantry, July 15, 1861.
Brigadier general, P. A. C. S., February 13, 1862.
Major general, P. A. C. S., September 9, 1863.
Died in New York city, October 9, 1868.

Commands.
April 16, 1862, Second Brigade, McLaw's Division, composed of the Fifteenth North Carolina, the Second Louisiana, and the Sixteenth and Twenty-fourth Georgia Regiments Infantry, and Cobb's Georgia Legion, Army of Northern Virginia.
June 22, commanding Second Brigade, Magruder's Division, Army of Northern Virginia.
August 13, 1862, commanding a brigade in McLaw's Division, First Corps, Army of Northern Virginia.
September 8, 1863, assigned command of reserve forces of the State of Georgia Militia in Confederate States service.
March 30, 1864, same command.
April 7, 1864, relieved from duty in Department of Tennessee.
September 28, 1864, assigned command of the District of Georgia, Department of Tennessee and Georgia.
March 27, 1865, same command.
