Civil War Soldiers - Briggs

Briggs, Henry S., brigadier-general, U.S. Army, was born in Aug., 1824, and in 1844 graduated from Williams college. He afterwards studied law and gained some distinction as a lawyer, and in 1861, at the outbreak of the Civil war, joined the Union army as colonel of the 10th Mass. volunteers. At the battle of Fair Oaks he distinguished himself, and on July 17, 1862, was made a brigadier- general of volunteers. He served throughout the war and was at its close a member of the general court-martial in Washington, D. C. He was mustered out of the service Dec. 4, 1865.
