In command of the Department of South Carolina and Georgia, August 29, 1863 ; Florida added to the department in 1863.
In command of the Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia, April 22, 1864.
In command of the troops in Southeastern Virginia, including Petersburg and Drewry's Bluff, May 14, 1864.
Commanding, October 17, 1864, Military Division of the West, east of the Mississippi River, comprising the Department of Tennessee and Georgia, commanded by General J. B. Hood, and the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana, commanded by Lieutenant General Richard Taylor.
February 16, 1865, in command of all troops operating in South Carolina.
February 25, 1865, announced as second in command of Army of Tennessee to General Joseph E. Johnston.
